Create Space Wales
In October 2021 I spent three weeks at CreateSpaceWales in Ceridigion, West Wales. The residency had been planned for the previous year (pre-lockdown), but it was a timely chance to come to terms with the recent death of my father and to reset my creativity. Being back in Wales among such glorious scenery was invigorating but, not being a landscape painter, nature fed indirectly into my work. I made figure sculptures, drew a lot, started some paintings, and made some moving images. Outside the studio, nestling at the foot of a small tree was a little china angel with a broken wing. It sparked off a series of thoughts about guardian angels, the film 'Wings of Desire', and Virginia Woolf's essay, 'Killing the Angel in the House'. I took with me a set of masks I'd made and placed found materials on them. The ambiguous image above shows a 'blind' drawing, tracing my face over the mask bringing myself to the fore – or was I?
The drawings below are part of a new series of work in progress, moving on from the residency and incorporating family memories. Mixed media, dimensions variable.
