Portraits of Resilience

These imaginary portraits draw on Elizabethan and Flemish portraiture, medieval ‘doom’ paintings, and deep-sea diving.  Symbols of restraint and defiance– the ruff, the diving helmet, and boxing gloves – act as both narrative and formal devices. Enigmatic women inhabit suspended spaces, engaged in interior exploration in a way that is contemplative, intimate, but ultimately defiant.

Histos

A series made from the viewpoint of the internal journeys of the women in The Iliad and The Odyssey. awaiting the return of their men from the Trojan Wars. Histos, in the original Greek, refers to the woven fabric or web of the loom. As well as paintings, this body of work included small sculptures and a short video, where loom weights become the embodiment of the maids slaughtered by Odysseus and Telemachus.
