Moving Still Lifes
Digital photograph of original gift, with details of drawings with superimposed projection together with studio shots of video installation
During Lockdown 2021 I searched for different ways to connect and to focus on the materiality of my practice. Collaborating distantly with my dance-artist daughter, I drew large, expressive drawings in response to her improvised movements. They are the start of an ongoing project (here).
Working that way inspired me to make a new series of woman-sized, dynamic charcoal drawings, based on a Mother's Day gift of flowers. The resulting anthropomorphic charcoal “moving still lifes”, are shown in a meditative space, with a close-up film moving through the flowers projected over them, creating a sensuous hypnotic atmosphere, pushing and probing the elusive surface; playing with drama, intimacy, and spectacle.
The drawings that hang as a projections screens are shown below (each about 150–60 cm x 150 cm, charcoal and graphite on Fabriano paper).
